Student Success Story: How Earning a CDL Helped Sterling Advance His Career

At just 22 years old, Sterling Neumer of Olathe, Kansas, is already taking steps to expand his skills and create more opportunities in the skilled trades.

Sterling works in the electrical trade, specializing in underground and streetlight work. When his employer approached him about earning his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) so he could haul equipment to and from job sites, he saw it as an opportunity to advance in his current career.

Sterling had also always been interested in trucking and understood just how important professional truck drivers are to communities and the economy.

His employer selected Zeta Commercial Driving School in Kansas City for his CDL training, but Sterling says the school would have been his choice as well.

“Given the flexible hours the school provides, the different courses held at the school, along with it being local and having great ratings, if I were to have the choice I would choose ZETA on my own.”

One of the highlights of Sterling’s experience was working with Zeta’s CDL instructors. He described them as friendly, approachable, and genuinely committed to helping students succeed. When students need additional help, the instructors take the time to work with them and share their own real-world experience.

For Sterling, earning a CDL isn’t necessarily about changing careers. Instead, his CDL training gives him an additional skill that can help him grow in the electrical trade, take on more responsibilities, and provide greater value to his employer.

Construction, utilities, electrical work, equipment operations, and other skilled trades often need employees who are qualified to operate commercial vehicles and transport equipment.
